Prevent bladder infections

Practical tips for avoiding bladder infections and maintaining a healthy urinary tract.

What is cystitis?

Bladder inflammation, also known as cystitis, is a common disease in which the bladder mucosa becomes inflamed by bacteria.
Anyone suffering from cystitis experiences a frequent urge to urinate and a burning sensation when urinating.
The bladder mucosa is irritated and less elastic, giving the impression that the bladder is constantly full.
Many sufferers experience recurring infections.
However, there are ways to effectively prevent bladder inflammation.

Drink enough

One of the most effective preventative measures is to drink enough fluids. Anyone who frequently suffers from cystitis should make sure they drink enough fluids (around two liters a day). This promotes the urge to urinate and flushes the urinary tract regularly, making it more difficult for bacteria to settle there. Unsweetened teas or diluted fruit juices are also good.

Hygiene plays a major role

Both inadequate and excessive intimate hygiene can increase the risk of bladder infections.
Frequent washing with unsuitable products or the use of intimate sprays dries out the mucous membranes and impairs their natural protective function, making it easier for pathogens to penetrate.
It is advisable to clean the intimate area exclusively with warm water or a pH-neutral washing lotion.

The choice of underwear is also crucial.
It should be changed daily and be made of breathable material such as cotton, as synthetic fabrics such as polyester can encourage the proliferation of germs.
The underwear should also fit well to avoid friction, as irritated skin makes it easier for bacteria to penetrate.

When to see a urologist?

If you suffer from repeated bladder infections, it is advisable to consult a urologist. They can give you specific advice and, if necessary, carry out further examinations to determine the cause and recommend a suitable treatment.
